Amiens Cathedral (Passages)

Choir: main vessel and south aisle, looking east

This view allows you to compare the space of the inner choir aisle with the soaring elevation of the central vessel. Above the main arcade of the choir the middle level, the triforium, is now glazed and each triple unit is surmounted by a gable. Directly in front of us you can see the oversized bay of the transept arcade contiguous with the crossing. The masonry of the arcade is heavily cracked: instability in this area led to the reconstruction of the triforium above. And at the level of the triforium sill you can see a vertically-placed iron bar: this anchors the end of the iron chain which runs the length of the choir. Eight such chains were installed in the years around 1500 in an attempt to stabilize the crossing pier.
