Amiens Cathedral, view from the port

We are standing at the Quai Belu which in the Middle Ages was a port where produce and merchandise traveling by boat down the river Somme would be unloaded.
It has now become a bustling area of riverside restaurants and bistros.
The saw-toothed roofline of the little houses across from us gives an impression of the dwellings of medieval artisans.
Beyond the little houses you can see the great 18th-century buildings of the bishop's palace (now a technical school)
The cathedral has a long boat-like silhouette: it is a basilica. The body of the cathedral is intersected at half-way point by a transept.
The steeple made of wood and lead that sits atop the intersection (the crossing) was built around 1530: the last such steeple in France it marks the end of the Life of the Gothic Cathedral
