The image is derived from the Book of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine: 1.13 "And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot and girt around the breast with a golden girdle."

The same book provided the key text for the consecration of churches and altars: 21.1: "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."
