In the strictest sense, refers to raised platforms from which an orator or priest addresses an assembly. In a more general sense, the term is used to refer to the apse or chancel of a basilica. It is usually used in the context of ancient or Early Christian basilicas or meeting places, synagogues, or Eastern Orthodox churches.
