Storm on the Sea of Galilee
(Matt. 8:23–27; Mark 4: 35–41; Luke 8:22–25)

As Christ and the disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee their boat was struck by a sudden storm which threatened to sink it. The frightened disciples awakened Christ who was asleep on a cushion in the stern. He calmed the sea with a few words, and rebuked the awestruck disciples for their faintheartedness. The scene is a ship tossing in heavy seas. Men struggle with the tiller and haul on the sheets. Christ sits peacefully in their midst, perhaps sleeping. The theme acquires allegorical overtones through the familiar Christian symbolism of the Church as a ship
