Christ Stripped of his Garments

One of the final scenes preceding the crucifixion itself. It is not mentioned specifically by the evangelists but is implied by the references to the soldiers casting lots for the Savior's clothes. He stands before the cross while one or more of his executioners tear off his garments, generally with some violence. The subject was used to decorate the sacristy, or robing-room, of a church. Its sequel, more rarely depicted, shows the Virgin binding a loincloth round the Savior's naked body.
