One of the final
scenes preceding the crucifixion itself. It is not mentioned specifically
by the evangelists but is implied by the references to the soldiers
casting lots for the Savior's clothes. He stands before the cross while
one or more of his executioners tear off his garments, generally with
some violence. The subject was used to decorate the sacristy, or robing-room,
of a church. Its sequel, more rarely depicted, shows the Virgin binding
