Amiens Cathedral (Ascent)

Crossing space and choir in medio ecclesiae

You are looking down at the eastern side of the expanded space at the middle of the cathedral which formed its dramaturgical heart in the Middle Ages. A wooden podium has been installed quite recently restoring to this area some of its ancient significance. To our right the choir is enclosed by an 18th-century screen (jubé) between the eastern crossing piers and by 16th-century lateral screens (clôtures) to north and south. Set in the lower part of the southern lateral screen you can see the tomb effigies of Bishop Ferry de Beauvoir and Dean Adrien de Hénencourt.
Look at the gaping cracks in the arcade to our right adjacent to the crossing. The cracks have resulted from the buckling inward of the crossing pier.
