Amiens Cathedral (Passages)

South choir aisles, eastern termination of the outer aisle

Amiens Cathedral has double choir aisles but a single ambulatory: the outer aisle is thus terminated in a wall enlivened with a composition in blind tracery matching the choir aisle windows. In the Middle Ages the eastern two bays of the outer aisle were enclosed, forming the chapel of Notre Dame l'Anglette (or l'Anglesque, Beata Maria Anglica, perhaps because of the patronage of Eleanor of Castille). The community of chaplains made this their headquarters and kept their archive here. There is a beautiful medieval piscina in the outer wall. In 1761 the altar of Saint Charles Borromeo was installed here: it had originally been located in the place of the demolished choir screen. In 1832 the statue of St Joseph (Duthoit brothers) replaced Saint Charles.
