Amiens Cathedral seen from upstream, River Somme

The river Somme flows away from us through Amiens and down to the English Channel.
This was a major artery for trade and commerce in the Middle Ages with raw wool reaching Amiens from England and woven woolen cloth manufactured in the city widely exported.
Navigation and use of the waterways was controlled by the cathedral chapter.
The blue vegetable dye, woad, was grown in the vallet of the Somme.
