We are standing atop the Befroi, the tower that represented the authority of the commune of Amiens.
Below us is the area most devastated in World War II: the blue-slate roofs belong to structures built immediately after the War.
The cathedral survived intact, as did the bishop's palace--the 18th-century structure to the north (left) of the cathedral.
