Liturgy 8

The Dead

At certain offices, mainly Primes, prayers would be offered for deceased benefactors of the church whose names were recorded in the Necrology, remembered on the anniversary of their death.  Some of these dead were remembered also through the presence of the tombs in the space of the cathedral.  The benefactor may have left an endowment (foundation) to the church: if so, the yield from that gift might be distributed amongst the canons present.  All Saints Day provided the moment for an inclusive memory of dead benefactors: the Amiens liturgy provided for a visit to the tombs of the founding bishops, Evrard de Fouilloy and Geoffroy d'Eu in the nave.
