Amiens Cathedral (Passages)

South Transept interior façade

The paneled lower wall of the façade (up to the triforium sill) was built by Thomas de Cormont, 1230s-40s. He decided to add a projecting frontispiece framing the portal: the Angels of the Passion occupy the upper compartments of this frame which is capped by an image of Saint Michael (c.1500).
This was the principal point of entry and exit for the clergy going to and from the Divine Office in the choir and their houses to the south of the cathedral.
The upper parts of the façade were originally built by Renaud de Cormont (1260s-70s) who probably installed a great rose window. This original window failed in the years around 1500 and was replaced by Pierre Tarisel in Flamboyant style. Brightly-colored angels occupy the curving petals of the rose.
The interior of the south transept is dominated by the angelic host.
