THE FOUR LATIN FATHERS
from From Abacus to Zeus1

St. Jerome, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, and St. Gregory are often grouped together as the Four Latin Fathers, or Doctors, of the Church. As scholars, teachers, and interpreters of Scripture, the Fathers are leading representatives of Christ's Church on earth, the Church Militant, and are thus sometimes grouped with the Four Evangelists, who represent the Spiritual Church. The Four Greek Fathers are St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Athanasius, and St. Gregory Nazianzus, but they are seldom represented in Western art.
