Grades of formality in the method of preparing tea temae 点前. The terms originate in the three styles of calligraphy sho 書, with shin 真 being formal, gyō 行 being semi-formal and sō 草 being informal. Particularly in the formal style, this distinction in ceremony is reflected in both the tea house *chashitsu 茶室 and the utensils of the ceremony *chanoyu-no-dōgu 茶の湯の道具.
