Volcanic tuff, or small volcanic detritus. Named for a valley, Shakutani 笏谷, in Fukui Prefecture, where it is found. It is also found in Shimane Prefecture and in the Nagoya area of Aichi Prefecture. It is used for podii, stone pagodas, and lanterns, and is also valued as a garden stone.
