General Terms

A generic term for the process used to build a fire-resistent wall. Typically the wooden structural frame is entirely covered with a layer of mud daub *tsuchikabe 土壁, and plaster *shikkui 漆喰. Both *nuriya-zukuri 塗屋造 and *dozō-zukuri 土蔵造 are examples of this type of construction. In a castle, the process not only prevents fire but also offers protection from bullets. One example is found in the top floor of Himeji-jō 姫路城, Hyōgo Prefecture. The process was also used in the night chamber *nurigome 塗篭, in some shinden style residences *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造 constructed during the Heian period.
