nagarehozo 流ほぞ

A sloped tenon, which is cut into the end of a beam. The top of the tenon is flush with the top surface of the beam. The indented part is cut on a slant about one third the width of the beam, sloping gradually until the bottom is flush with the under surface of the beam. One variation is kurakakehozo 鞍掛ほぞ, an oblique, housed tenon that fits into a mortise cut on the outer edge of a beam leaving a 30 mm piece in the center. These joints can be used in many places for bracing or reinforcing as for example in corner construction.
