manmōsō 縵網相

Also shusokushi manmōsō 手足指縵網相. A web-like membrane between the fingers and toes found on sculpted Buddhist images. One of the 32 characteristics of Buddha *sanjūnisō 三十二相, and seen on *nyorai 如来 and *bosatsu 菩薩 images. For example, manmōsō can be clearly seen on the raised right hand of the Shaka nyorai-zō 釈迦如来像 in Kanimanji 蟹満寺, Kyoto (bronze, late 7th century). In wooden statues of the Heian period, this membrane was often carved in very fine fretwork.
