General Terms

1 Also called *ukebana 受花. A section of a lotus pedestal *rengeza 蓮華座 which resembles a flower platter. It takes the form of a round and relatively flat open lotus flower with six or eight petals. The flower petals turn upward, in contrast with the petals of a *kaeribana 反花, which turn downward. The keban is usually placed between the *renben 蓮弁, the lotus petals in the upper register, and the *shikinasu 敷茄子, the bulging middle section of the base. In a more complex rengeza, the keban is placed between the upper and lower shikinasu. Lotus pedestals with keban were used for 8th-century sculpture, as for example, the Fukūkenjaku Kannon 不空羂索観音 in Tōdaiji *Hokkedō 東大寺法華堂, Nara. After lotus pedestals became more popular and more complex in the Heian period, keban became more frequent.

2 More commonly referred to as keko 華籠. The flower baskets or plates that are used for Buddhist flower-scattering rituals.
