Lit. dry waterfall. A common technique in dry landscape *karesansui 枯山水 in which a symbolic waterfall is made with an arrangement of stones. Typically the waterfall is represented by standing the bluestone, ao-ishi, 青石 lengthwise to symbolize the cascade. At the foot of this some gravel or white sand is placed to make a dry stream *karenagare 枯流. Good examples are found in gardens at Saihōji 西芳寺, Daisen'in 大仙院 at Daitokuji 大徳寺 both in Kyoto, Tōkōji 東光寺 in Yamanashi Prefecture, and the old Ni no maru 二之丸 at Nagoyajō 名古屋城 in Aichi Prefecture.
