Lit. shrine architecture. The architecture associated with Shinto shrines, including all the shrine buildings, shaden 社殿 and subordinate or affiliated shrine buildings. Usually, a shrine can be identified by the placement of a *torii 鳥居, a type of pillar structure marking entrance to the grounds. The number of these open gate-like structures vary depending on the size and importance of the shrine. The most sacred area is surrounded by one to four fences. See *mizugaki 瑞垣, *tamagaki 玉垣. Within this area is included the main sanctuary *honden 本殿, the worship hall *haiden 拝殿, and additional buildings according to the status of the shrine.
