The ogre-face tile *onigawara 鬼瓦, placed at the ends of offspring ridges *chigomune 稚子棟, at the corners of hip-and-gable roofs *irimoya yane 入母屋根. The end of the longer, descending part of the the corner ridge *sumi kudarimune 隅下棟, is faced with another ogre tile called ni no oni 二の鬼. No reason has been discovered as to why the ends of the two corner ridges have an ogre tile, introduced at the late 7th century to the early 8th century. Not all so-called ogre tiles have faces.
