The square struts used to support the ends of veranda boards. Circular posts are thought to have been used earlier than square ones. However, according to some scholars, the veranda of the mansion (now *Denpōdō 伝法堂) that was donated to Hōryūji 法隆寺 in Nara by the noblewoman, Lady Tachibana 橘, in the 8th century originally had square posts.
