Hoshi mandara 星曼荼羅

Lit. "star mandara." A variety of dedicated mandala *Butsugen mandara 仏眼曼荼羅 depicting various deities symbolizing stars hoshi 星 or heavenly bodies. There are several types; *hokuto mandara 北斗曼荼羅 centered on Shaka Kinrin 釈迦金輪; the Myōken mandara 妙見曼荼羅 centered on *Myōken 妙見; the Shūnanzan mandara 終南山曼荼羅 which reflects Daoist influence; the Hokuto mandara of Chinese provenance Tōhon hokuto mandara 唐本北斗曼荼羅 centered on Shijōkō *Butchō 熾盛光仏頂; the Kara-zu 火羅図 which resembles a horoscope; and the Shichisei nyoirin mandara 七星如意輪曼荼羅 centered on *Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音.
Hoshi mandara is sometimes used to refer to the Hokuto mandara.
