hoshi mandara 星曼荼羅

Lit. star mandara. A variety of dedicated mandala *Butsugen mandara 仏眼曼荼羅 depicting various deities symbolizing stars hoshi 星 or heavenly bodies. There are several types; *hokuto mandara 北斗曼荼羅 centered on Shaka kinrin 釈迦金輪; the Myōken mandara 妙見曼荼羅 centered on *Myōken 妙見; the shūnanzan mandara 終南山曼荼羅 which reflects Daoist influence; the hokuto mandara of Chinese provenance tōhon hokuto mandara 唐本北斗曼荼羅 centered on Shijōkō *Butchō 熾盛光仏頂; the Kara-zu 火羅図 which resembles a horoscope; and the shichisei nyoirin mandara 七星如意輪曼荼羅 centered on *Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音.
Hoshi mandara is sometimes used to refer to the hokuto mandara.
