Lit. abolish Buddha. It was government policy during the early Meiji period to repress Buddhism in favor of Shinto which was promoted as the state religion. In 1868 the removal of Buddhist influence from Shinto shrines was decreed, thus reducing a long confluence of religious practice. Much destruction of Buddhist sites and artifacts ensued, and the resulting changes in Buddhist practices were of lasting significance.
