Also haigi. An archaic term for *nodaruki, 野垂木 (a hidden rafter). A timber piece that stretches from the ridge of a building to an eave end. The word appears in the Wamyōshō 和名抄, completed by the Jōhei 承平 (931-38) era, an important historical source. The Kensōki 顕宗紀 relates that in a song composed to commemorate a new room, the haegi or rafters held up the roof like "the heart of the head of the family that holds up" those who are dependent on him.
