Heavenly musicians. Heavenly beings *hiten 飛天, playing musical instruments, depicted flying around a Buddha figure. Outstanding sculpted examples can be seen attached to the canopies *tengai 天蓋 in Hōryūji *Kondō 法隆寺金堂 (prob c. 1233), Nara, and on the walls of Byōdōin *Hōōdō 平等院鳳凰堂 (1053) Kyoto.
