Also read fundame. A technique of coating a statue with gold. Used during and after the Kamakura period. The figure was painted with a layer of lacquer or animal glue, *nikawa 膠, and gold dust was sprinkled on the surface. The effect was less shiny than gold leaf, *shippaku 漆箔. Often fundami was used by itself on a statue's body, and combined with cut gold, *kirikane 切金, on drapery.
