dokuritsu tenshu 独立天守

Lit. "independent donjon or keep." Also called dokuritsushiki tenshu 独立式天守, dokuritsu tenshukaku 独立天守閣. A large, single, timber-framed castle tower, *yagura 櫓, with no other structures connected to it. Good examples are Uwajima-jō 宇和島城 in Ehime Prefecture, Maruoka-jō 丸岡城 in Fukui Prefecture, and Bitchū-Matsuyama-jō 備中松山城 in Okayama Prefecture.
