Tea Houses

Also called ōro. A tea-room firebox or hearth made larger than the normal 42 cm square. Measurements varied, but some reached 53 cm square in the Momoyama period, while others, rectangular in shape, were about 24 cm wide by 55 cm long. Large fireboxes could be constructed only in tea ceremony rooms large enough to accommodate them. Oversized fireboxes built separately in the tea ceremony kitchen *mizuya 水屋, are also called ōro. Example: Shōkintei 松琴亭, Katsura Rikyū 桂離宮, Kyoto.
