agemise 揚見世

Also called *battari shōgi ばったり床几 or age-en あげ縁.

1　A display table that doubled as a panel to close the front of a shop *mise 店. Found in the urban houses of merchants and artisans *machiya 町家 of the Edo period. A kind of door fitting *tategu 建具, which in a raised position (1.8 m) served along with a hinged shutter *shitomi 蔀, that covered the upper part of the opening, to close the front of the shop. The agemise also folded down to make a platform or low table (90 cm deep) on which to display items for sale. When it was raised to cover the opening, the front legs could be folded away. The term was used in the Kansai 関西 region, whereas in the Kantō 関東 region the alternative term, age-en, was more common.

2　In the Kōchi Prefecture, agemise referred to the hinged shutter shitomi; and when in the table position it was called *shimomise 下店.
