Also called tōshi hozosashi 通しほぞ差; uchinuki hozo 打抜ほぞ. A through tenon and mortise angle joint. A tenon *hozo ほぞ carved into one member to allow it to penetrate a mortise *hozoana ほぞ穴 that is cut through another timber. The end of the inserted tenon is visible on the opposite side of the member into which it has been inserted. In contrast, tome hozo 留ほぞ (also called tsutsumi hozosashi 包ほぞ差) refers to a mortise and tenon which terminate within the member. Both tōshi hozo and tome hozo are often used in furniture making.
