Also called kōshibuta 格子蓋.

1 A lid or cover made for a cut-out in the floor of a kitchen or storeroom *nando 納戸, so that air from under the building could circulate in those rooms.

2 The lattice style cover for a sunken heating device or foot warmer, horigotatsu 掘炬燵, that used charcoal for fuel. The subuta permitted the heat to rise and at the same time protected the feet that rested on it.
