aburidashi 炙出

Also written あぶりだし. Hidden pictures that are painted or printed on paper using rice-wine, alum, or citrus juice, which then becomes visible when the sheet of paper is heated, aburu 炙る. A type of amusement incorporating invisible pictures with woodblock prints *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 or omocha-e 玩具絵. Examples are exceedingly rare. Documentary evidence suggests that the technique was used in producing an 1809 print that presented a program listing actors' names, but when heated revealed the actors' likenesses *nigao-e 似顔絵.
