An octagonal hall *hakkaku endō 八角円堂, at Sanshōji 三聖寺 in Kyoto, which houses the Buddhist deity *Aizen Myōō 愛染明王. Built in the Muromachi period, the hall stands on a stone podium *kiso 基礎, typical of structures from the 7c-12c. Simple panelled doors *sangarado 桟唐戸, are set in each bay *ken 間, which measures 2.49m. The hall follows *zenshūyō 禅宗様, and is characterized by the paneled doors; the bracket complex *tokyō 斗きょう; the nosings *kibana 木鼻; and the smooth, boarded ceiling *kagamitenjō 鏡天井, on the interior. The hall has double eaves which include base and flying rafters *keshō daruki 化粧垂木 and *hien daruki 飛檐垂木. The roofing is made of thinly cut wood shingles *kokerabuki 柿葺. The Buddhist altar *shumidan 須弥壇, is large relative to the rest of the interior. On the altar is a circular pagoda-like reliquary *hōtō 宝塔, containing a figure of Aizen.
