A gutter used to carry rainwater from the eave-ends to a downspout or hanging chain and thence to the ground. This method was used only after the late 19th century. However, many temples or shrine buildings have continued to use traditional methods to channel rainwater from above. For example, rainwater is allowed to run down the roof and off the edge of the eaves into a ditch filled with thick gravel padding which prevents mud from splashing onto the building and lets the water seep into the earth.
