Also read nochizuri. Woodblock prints *ukiyo-e 浮世絵, produced during later runs. Prints produced from the first printing under the supervision of the artist and the publisher are called shozuri 初摺, whereas later printings are called either atozuri or nochizuri. In order to determine the value of an atozuri print, it is often necessary to compare it with a print from the shozuri impression. Atozuri are generally thought to be less valuable than shozuri because the woodblock wears after numerous impressions resulting in imperfections in lines and fuzzy details and because the artist and publisher pay less attention to the printing. Occasionally, however, the first editions may be altered by the artist, resulting in improved later editions. Atohan 後版 is synonymous with atozuri, but it sometimes means reproductions made from a new set of woodblocks.
