A Noh mask *nōmen 能面 of the basic emaciated *yase-otoko 痩男 type with features similar to *kawazu 蛙. Used only rarely, as a replacement for kawazu or yase-otoko in plays such as Akogi 阿漕, it portrays the suffering ghost of a man who has drowned, hence the name awaotoko, which literally means man of the sea-foam.
