A wooden measuring gauge *jōgi 定規, generally, 6-7 cm wide, 35-45 cm long, and 0.9-12 cm thick. It is made up of a pair of symmetrical boards. The name is derived from one board being mounted on top of the other using two dowels or joggles *daboso 太ぼそ. The boards are easily separated. By rubbing the sides of gauges together, the accuracy of a straight line is ascertained. The flatness of planes, kannadai 鉋台, the lower edge or the under edge on the base of the plane, or the accuracy of a straight line of the material to be processed is checked by utilizing the straight line of the gauge.
