awate-e あわて絵

Multi-colored woodblock prints *nishiki-e 錦絵, depicting the confusion in the internal government and world events in the mid-19th century, when the Tokugawa 徳川 government fell and the Meiji government arose in its place. The term awate-e was first coined in the 20th century by Kobori Sakae 小堀栄. Most such prints were produced without signatures or seals in the second half of the 19th century. Producers commonly included kanji 漢字 and even lines of writing on the prints.
