Bunchō's Treatise on Painting, an early 18th-century miscellany on painters, painting techniques, tools, and subjects by connoisseur and artist Tani Bunchō 谷文晁 (1763-1840). Published ca. 1811, Bunchō gadan ranges from sophisticated arguments distinguishing between obscure old painters to more conventional discussions of painting methods. A dedicated student of old Japanese paintings, Bunchō wrote and illustrated numerous books on paintings including Gagakusai kaganzukō 画学斎過眼図藁 (Gagakusai's Sketches of Seen Pictures), Bunchō zatsurokuchō 文兆雑録帳 (Bunchō's Miscellaneous Records), and Honchō gasan 本朝画纂 (Collection of Japanese Painting), in addition to illustrating the 85 volume inventory of national treasures *Shūko jisshu 集古十種 published in 1800 (Kansei 寛政 4).
