Also aibashira 間柱. A white bamboo post with an odd number of joints, which is positioned beneath the eave overhang and reaches the ground in front of the outer wall of a hut style tea ceremony room. About 3-6 cm in diameter. Often placed in front of the window, by the mat containing a portable brazier *furosakimado 風炉先窓. Sometimes it stands in front of the exterior of a bamboo-lath, vine-entwined window *shitajimado 下地窓. An example of chikaradake can be seen at the middle entrance *nakakuguri 中潜 of Omotesenke 表千家 in Kyoto. The chikaradake has no structural purpose; it is exclusively decorative, meant to produce a contrast with the wall.
