Sometimes it stands in front of the exterior of a bamboo-lath, vine-entwined window *shitajimado 下地窓. An example of chikaradake can be seen at the middle entrance *nakakuguri 中潜 of Omotesenke 表千家 in Kyoto. The chikaradake has no structural purpose; it is exclusively decorative, meant to produce a contrast with the wall.
