Lit. cross-stitch layout. Also read chigirinawa. Also written 蟄亀利縄. A generic term for various types of castle entrance *koguchi 虎口 layouts, generally of a simple design. These include: *azuchi umadashi 的山馬出 (straight line barrier); sō-no-maru umadashi 草の丸馬出 (simple semi-circular barrier); sō-no-kaku umadashi 草の角馬出 (simple squared-off barrier); masugata-mukai-koguchi 桝形向かい虎口 (square box-like enclosure with facing gateways); shitomi-no-doi 蔀の土居 (embankment with screening plant); umadashinashi-no-koguchi 馬出無しの虎口 (gateway with no barriers); hidarisode-no-yōsu 左袖の様子 (left sleeve gateway). Chikirinawa was one of the five basic principles of castle planning nawabarihō 縄張法, used by Edo period military scholars. The other four were: genryūnawa 現籠縄, chinryūnawa 沈籠縄, manjinawa 満字縄, and yamatonawa 大和縄.
