Painting
Lit. pictures of horse training. One theme of genre painting *fūzokuga 風俗画 popular in the late 16th and early 17th century. Many screen paintings of this type were created by members of the Kano school *Kano-ha 狩野派, and anonymous artists. Typically, a wide variety of horses are shown being bridled and saddled by grooms, then ridden by warriors. A single six-panel screen in the Dōmoto 堂本 collection, Kyoto, combines scenes of horse training with a daimyō 大名 watching the action from inside a tearoom. The screen may have been paired with a painting of stabled horses *umaya-zu 厩図 or some other horse paintings such as pictures of wild horses *gunba-zu 群馬図, and horses at pasture *bokuba-zu 牧馬図.
