Lit. straight line roof. Roofs without any curved surfaces. A hip roof *yosemune-zukuri 寄棟造, for example, that has straight lines on all four of the descending corner ridges *sumi kudarimune 隅降棟. Roof curves are not used for traditional vernacular dwellings *minka 民家, warriors' dwellings buke yashiki 武家屋敷 (see *buke-zukuri 武家造), or shrines *jinja 神社 with gable roofs *kirizuma-zukuri 切妻造 in the shinmei style *shinmei-zukuri 神明造, ōtori style *ōtori-zukuri 大鳥造 and sumiyoshi style *sumiyoshi-zukuri 住吉造. The following are examples of chokusen yane.
On minka
1 A gable type roof in the praying hands style *gasshō-zukuri 合掌造 made of thatch *kayabuki 茅葺 (Edo period), Toyama Prefecture.
2 The old Taniyama 谷山 family dwelling tiled gable roof *hongawarabuki 本瓦葺 (Edo period), Wakayama Prefecture.
On buke yashiki
1 Long gate with living quarters nagayamon 長屋門 belonging to middle class warrior chūkyū bushi 中級武士 (Edo period), Ishikawa Prefecture. The roof is covered with pantiles *sangawarabuki 桟瓦葺.
On jinja
1 Nishina Shinmeigū 仁科神明宮 (1636), Nagano Prefecture, shinmei-zukuri, cypress bark shingled roof *hiwadabuki 桧皮葺.
2 Sumiyoshi Taisha Honden 住吉大社本殿 (1810), Osaka, sumiyoshi-zukuri, hiwadabuki.
