Lit. a middle-size book. A woodblock printed book, popular during the Edo period, which is one-half the size of a minobon 美濃本 (approximately 200 × 280 mm), or halfway between the minobon and a kohon 小本 (a half *hanshi 半紙 book which is about 165 × 235 mm). There is also a smaller version of the hanshi book size *yomihon 読本 which is called chūhon. Chūhon can also indicate *ninjōbon 人情本 and *kokkeibon 滑稽本, as they are also made in this size.
