1a.) Furring strips made of thin wood or bamboo that are nailed horizontally to posts to form the base for vertical boards or bamboo.
1b.) A fence made of brushwood bundles, logs, or several layers of bamboo tied to vertical furring strips, or thin wooden lath. This method is used for large fences, *ōgaki 大垣, or side fences, *sodegaki 袖垣.
2 To make a wooden wall, furring strips are nailed vertically and horizontally between posts, or set into pillars using a tenon, *hozo ほぞ, and mortise, *hozo-ana ほぞ穴, to make a firm level surface on which to nail wall boards.
