Lit. saw with attached spine. A tenon or back saw. A saw designed especially to cut the shoulder of a tenon. The blade is about 25 cm long, 6 cm high, and about 2 mm thick, which is exceptionally thin compared to other saws. Because the blade is sheathed with a spine of soft steel or brass, the teeth on this type of saw are extremely fine. Thus the cut is very smooth and does not need to be finished with a plane. The dōtsukinoko is used work for detailed finishing jobs on various house fittings.

a) metal spine b) section cut with dōtsukinoko
c ) use of dōtsukinoko (back saw)
