Also written 蝦の腰 or 蝦腰. A type of decorative molding *kurigata 繰形, used on the sides of a Song style Buddhist platform *shumidan 須弥壇. The molding was imported to Japan as part of the Zen style *zenshūyō 禅宗様, in the Kamakura period. The ebi-no-koshi forms a convex section in the narrowest part of the platform, and is decorated with vertical lines carved in openwork *sukashibori 透彫, or low relief *usunikubori 薄肉彫.
