Lit. branch strut. Also called hōzue 方杖; hasuzuka 斜束 or nanamezuka 斜め束. Diagonal braces used in the framework of a roof to strengthen the corners where posts and purlins are joined, as a prop for an eave overhang *noki-no-de 軒の出, or below ground as a strengthening support for the base of a post or pillar.
